Definition of Psychotherapy
How can Psychotherapy Assist You?
A key objective we have at Gold Coast Hypnosis – your personal Academy of Hypnosis – is to provide a service of providing clear information and reliable content to assist you in your decision making about which therapies to adopt as you proactively face the normal challenges presented by your career situation and by life in general.

One word that often gives rise to misunderstanding is ‘psychotherapy’. Let’s now seek to dispel any confusion by providing a definition of psychotherapy. Our psychotherapy definition is-
| ‘The use of appropriate combinations of various techniques within an appropriate inter-personal relationship between client and qualified practitioner (and preferably in accordance with an agreed ‘therapeutic contract’ or agreement about desired outcomes etc) to assist the client deal with emotional issues, performance issues and other life and career problems.’ | The techniques referred to might include, but would not necessarily be limited to, counselling, Psychodynamic or Depth Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Transactional Analysis and hypnotherapy. Psychotherapy is practiced by a broad range of professionals including social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and hypnotherapists. Each have different emphasis and limitations on their approach. For example, psychiatrists can involve diagnosing of specific conditions and prescription of medication therapy to include in an intervention strategy. Other psychotherapists are generally not qualified to diagnose or prescribe medication. For this reason, it is important to select a thoroughly trained and qualified practitioner who will always insist on a medical diagnosis whenever there exists even the slightest doubt concerning the matter being addressed and its ‘fit’ within the therapeutic qualifications and capabilities of the practitioners. All good therapists will err on the side of caution in this regard. At Gold Coast Hypnosis, we always require clients to ask their primary care physician for a ‘statement of no contra indications’ to our proposed therapy intervention prior to proceeding. Where necessary we will seek permission to discuss the case direct with the client’s physician before proceeding. In this way clients are guaranteed the safest and most effective outcome possible. At Gold Coast Hypnosis we focus on what we call ‘positive psychotherapy’. While we do have interest in getting a clear understanding of the issue you are facing, our intervention emphasis is definitely solution oriented. We use a balance of understanding of the background factors that gave rise to the ‘mental imprint’ or ‘dysfunctional assumption’ which might lie at the core of the problem, and of action in way you think about and behave in relation to the problem and how a change of this thinking and behaviour might lead to a preferred outcome. We typically use hypnotherapy – what might better be termed ‘psychotherapy hypnosis’ in this context - to expedite achievement of desired therapeutic outcomes.
